Rates of information aggregation in common value auctions

چکیده

We study the rates at which transaction prices aggregate information in common value auctions under the different information structures in Wilson (Rev. Econ. Stud. 44 (1977) 511) and Pesendorfer and Swinkels (Econometrica 65 (1997) 1247). We consider uniform-price auctions in which k identical objects of unknown value are auctioned to n bidders, where both n and k are allowed to diverge to infinity, and k=n converges to a number in 1⁄20; 1Þ: The Wilson assumptions lead to information aggregation at a rate proportional to n= ffiffiffi k p ; but the price aggregates information at a rate proportional to ffiffiffi k p in the PS setting. We also consider English auctions, and investigate whether the extra information revealed in equilibrium improves convergence rates in these auctions. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Empirical Tests of Information Aggregation

This paper proposes tests to empirically examine whether auction prices aggregate information away from the limit. These tests are based on 1) a combination of comparative statics with respect to the number of bidders and the dispersion of information signals and 2) comparison of actual prices to predicted Nash equilibrium prices based on observed auction parameters. When applied to eBay online...

Information aggregation in auctions with an unknown number of bidders

Information aggregation, a key concern for uniform-price, common-value auctions with many bidders, has been characterized in models where bidders know exactly how many rivals they face. A model allowing for uncertainty over the number of bidders is essential for capturing a critical condition for information to aggregate: as the numbers of winning and losing bidders grow large, information aggr...

The Loser's Curse and Information Aggregation in Common Value Auctions

We consider an auction in which k identical objects of unknown value are auctioned off to n bidders. The k highest bidders get an object and pay the k + 1st bid. Bidders receive a signal that provides information about the value of the object. We characterize the unique symmetric equilibrium of this auction. We then consider a sequence of auctions Ar with nr bidders and kr objects. We show that...

A Common Value Auction with Bid Solicitation∗

We study a first-price auction for a single good with common values. The novel feature is that the number of bidders is endogenous: the seller (auctioneer) knows the value and solicits bidders. Soliciting bidders is costly. The bidders privately observe noisy signals of the true value, as in the standard auction model. However, the number of solicited bidders is unobservable to them. The number...

Rationalizability and Monotonicity in Large Uniform Price and Double Auctions

We analyze a broad class of auctions in which goods are traded at a single price, such as the uniform price auctions and the double auction (Satterthwaite and Williams (1989)), while admitting the presence of both common and private value and allowing players to trade more than one unit of the object. Instead of calculating a Nash equilibrium, we first eliminate the weakly dominated strategies,...
